This art form named after its place of origin, Nirmal in adilabad district of Andhra Pradesh, is practiced by an exclusive group of artisans called 'Naqash', In the 1950's, Lady Hyderi brought the artisans to Hyderabad and promoted this craft. Indigenous colors extracted from Miniralsm, gums and herbs are used for the paintings. The concept and themes suggest influences from Indian schools like Kangra, Ajanta and from Moghul miniatures. The paintings of dazzling golden hue are set against a dark backdrop. The rhythm of a musician and the graceful movement of a danseuse captivate the onlooker with their sheer expression and form.
